SPIRITUAL LEADER & HUMANITARIAN AMMA TO OPEN ORPHANAGE IN HAITI

9 March 2010
San Ramon, California, USA

Embracing the WorldTM (ETW), the charitable humanitarian organization of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma), is starting an orphanage in Haiti in order to care of children who lost their relatives in the earthquake of 12 January 2010.

ETW has rented a four-story house in Laboulle, a suburb in the hills outside of Port-au-Prince, which is in the process of being converted into an orphanage. The requisite applications have been filed with the Haitian Government. ETW will initially assume care for 25 orphaned children.

“When Amma heard about the earthquake, she was filled with compassion for the people suffering there. She immediately told me to fly to Haiti and try to learn the most effective ways in which ETW could help,” said Brahmachari Dayamrita, a monastic disciple of Amma and coordinator of ETW’s North American activities Reports say that after the earthquake Haiti is now home to nearly one-million orphaned children.

Other Haiti relief-and-rehabilitation work conducted by ETW includes the shipment of a container of medical supplies, which was sent two weeks following the disaster. The supplies were received by Partners In Health, a Boston-based charitable organization that has been working in Haiti for the past 20 years. The supplies included assorted medications, surgical equipment, feeding and drainage tubes, assorted wound-care supplies, diagnostic supplies, syringes, needles, sheets and blankets, drapes, tents, sleeping bags, face masks, obstetric and infant-care supplies, wheelchairs, crutches, braces, splints, protein powders, saline solution and disinfectants.

ETW is currently assembling a second container, which will be shipped as soon as possible.

ETW’s orphanage in Haiti will be its third such institution; the others being Amrita Niketan in Kerala, India, which ETW began managing in 1989, and Amrita Watoto Boma in Nairobi, inaugurated in 2009.* Furthermore, ETW has been involved in disaster relief for a decade, providing extensive relief after floods in Andhra Pradesh (2009), Bihar
(2008), Mumbai (2005), as well as in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (2005), the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004), and the Gujarat earthquake (2001).

Embracing the World is the collective name for Amma’s worldwide charitable network. Amrita Niketan is managed by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math; Amrita Watoto Boma is managed by Amma-Kenya; and the new orphanage in Haiti is being developed specifically through the Mata Amritanandamayi Center’s Health Care Charities, Inc., and the Amma Foundation of Canada.
